GOVERNOR SCHWARENEGGER’S PROMISES
TO DISABLED RESIDENTS AT REGENCY COURT APARTMENTS
ARE MADE OFFICIAL
Los Angeles, 21 September 2009
Today Michelle Uzeta, Litigation Director of the Housing Rights Center–Los Angeles, announced that she had received a letter from Craig Diamond, the attorney representing Star Holdings of Illinois, owners of Regency Court Apartments in Monrovia, confirming what Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had promised the disabled residents last Friday at his press conference.
In an email to the residents, families, and supporters Uzeta stated that she had received a fax this morning from Diamond confirming all four of the terms set out in her demand letter of September 18th including the reinstatement of all the developmentally disabled individuals purged from Regency Court’s waiting list.
Uzeta’s September 18th demand letter to Diamond can be read here.
Uzeta stated in her message to the residents that the only point yet to be resolved is whether Regency Court will assert senior status to refuse admission or placement on the waitlist of people with disabilities in the future. She confirmed that the Housing Rights Center will continue to pursue its discrimination complaint with the Department of Fair Employment and Housing until it is clarified and confirmed that Regency Court cannot exclude prospective residents on the basis of age under state and federal fair housing laws.
The Housing Rights Center is a non-profit organization established in 1968 to actively support and promote equal opportunity and freedom of residence to all persons without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, familial status, disability, marital status, ancestry, age, source of income, or other characteristics protected by law.

Watching the news report of what’s happening at Regency Court made me cry. It is so wrong. What are the tax credits that Craig Diamond, attorney for some greed for profit company, is referring to? Come on Craig-what are you doing? Get a spine.
I know one of these families and their daughter is a really great friend of mine (Lily Hixon) and I love them for doing this for her and her neighbors. I am really upset at the people doing this and it is not fair to the disabled to do it even if its for tax reasons. People should be allowed to be in their homes! Good Job Lily! and Ken!
[Susy -- Don't forget Sam, Lily's brother, he's the one who created this website and our Flickr and Facebook pages. Thanks for you support, Ken.]
